Some Basic Facts About French (The National Language of France)

French is an independent language belonging to the romance family of the European Indo-European language family. The romance languages include the central romance languages (French, Italian, Sardinia, Catalunya, etc.), the western romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese, etc.) and the eastern romance languages (Romanian, etc.).

French is one of the most widely spoken independent romance languages after Spanish.
