The Current Situation and Future of the AI - From the Perspective of Modern Machine Translation


With the spring breeze of reform and opening up, the level of science and technology in China is developing constantly, and the wave of artificial intelligence has seen its "third wave". The student press corps from several major universities in Beijing came to a company specializing in intelligent voice technology, science and technology, personally experienced the whole process of machine recognition and translation.


In the company's experience pavilion, the interpreter speaks a piece of Chinese at a normal speed while holding a microphone in his hand. At the same time, the text version of what he just said and its corresponding foreign translation, in English, Arabic and Uygur, appear on the screen. It is learned that the company's independent research and development of the translation machine is able to identify 33 kinds of European, American and Asian countries' important languages, and can support the four dialects (Cantonese, Sichuanese, Northeast Dialect, Henan dialect) for successful recognition.


The advent of artificial intelligence translation machine has undoubtedly brought great convenience to our life. We can not only complete simple conversations with foreign friends, but also reduce the workload of professional translators and save time, cost, manpower and material resources.


However, the emergence of artificial intelligence translation machine has also stirred up a wave of people's discussion on whether artificial intelligence translation can replace high-level translation talents. Tan Bing, deputy director of consumer BG business line at iflytek, believes that in the short term, artificial intelligence is unlikely to replace human translation, but only repetitive and uncreative labor. Translation is actually a kind of creative work, rather than mechanically converting Chinese and foreign languages into each other. The technology of artificial intelligence is more to assist human beings to put the saved energy into more creative work.

For the general public, artificial intelligence is still a new field, people realize that the emergence of some high-tech can facilitate our life. China's artificial intelligence is still in the development stage, speech intelligence is only one aspect, intelligent translation is just a small part of it. However much the AI translation machine achieves today, it still has a lot to consolidate and improve.

The development of artificial intelligence is from weak to strong, continuous iterative transformation. This process requires the support of high-quality technical personnel, the imagination of thinking about life, and the guidance of the spirit of innovation.
